The support of accessible tourism by accessible ticket vending machines
Workshop Lead: Karin Siebenhandl 1): Best Practices on ticket vending machines
Keynote: Franz Pühretmair 2): Key aspects on accessibility
Further Contributors 3: (with no extra presentation): Eva Mayr, Günther Schreder
Studies on mobility and demographic characteristics indicate that access to transport (whether public or driving) is an important factor for a person's quality of life. With respect to transportation facilities travelling accessibility refers not only to physical barriers and / or built environment, but also to the full range of information, that is needed in order to plan travel options and affect the choice of mobility. In this connection access barriers to (foreign) public transport systems are often the result of insufficient knowledge of how to use the electronic systems (e.g. ticket machines) that are becoming increasingly common at railway stations. The complexity of these systems in combination with obscure price models and insufficient accessibility further reduces the operability. Additionally these systems are taking over different duties of a sales person that are, next to selling tickets providing information about time tables, booking seats, and travelling routes. The hardware and software used in self-service machines can also raise additional barriers for people with restricted mobility or people who have a low affinity for technology.
Based on the outcomes of the project InnoMat1 the aim of this workshop will be to discuss the aspect of accessible tourism regarding the design of a novel ticket vending machine:
How can a novel ticket vending machine be designed to enable easy access and high usability for different user groups?
Results from the workshop are planned to be integrated to a catalogue of user requirements that can be used as a guideline for inclusive design of ticket vending machines.

WS2: Trends und Innovationen im barrierefreien Tourismus
Workshopbeschreibung:

WS4: Result of the Call: Vocational Education and Training
Disability awareness and training for tourism personnel is essential for the development of accessible tourism and it is crucial in order to ensure that tourists with disabilities, elderly and other special needs e.g. allergies or special nutritional needs, receive the assistance they may need and that they are treated like any other guest Personnel who have an understanding of disability and its diversity, and the types of barriers people with disabilities experience, will be better able
to provide a high quality service that respects the independence and dignity of each disabled tourist.
Neither at national nor at the European level there are standards defining contents and methods of vocational education and training for personnel dealing with the specific needs of different groups of persons with isabilities.
Participants should analyse what experiences and solutions have been particularly successful and what examples can internationally be taken as best practice with regard to training and vocational education of tourism personnel and how is disability awareness integrated in the curriculum.
The analysis should result in the elaboration of recommendations for minimum standards for training of personnel in the European tourism branch.

WS 6: Success evaluation of Accessible Tourism for All (in German)
Despite different approaches certain factors have emerged which positively influence the development of Accessible Tourism for All. A current study commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology identifies seven success factors that have to be considered during the development of an Accessible tourism for All.
With these seven success factors and their basic criteria the current situation on site shall be discussed and evaluated by using selected examples from the participants of the workshop.
A specially designed checklist can be used (also after the workshop) for self-assessment and evaluation of the situation on site. The checklist can also be used as an information source for all stakeholders participating in a project and to easily follow and evaluate the process to create an accessible facility or destination.
